Frequently Asked Questions
What is Khan Academy Kids?
A free educational app for children ages 2–8, with games, books, and lessons that build early literacy, math, and social-emotional skills.
Is Khan Academy Kids free?
Yes. The app is free to download and use. Families get all 4,000+ activities, videos, and books with no subscription, no ads, and no in-app purchases. For schools and districts using Khan Academy Kids across multiple classrooms, we recommend Khan Academy Kids for Schools.
Is Khan Academy Kids free for teachers?
Yes. Any teacher can set up a free teacher account, assign lessons, view activities by standards, and see classroom-level reporting. There's no paid plan required to use Khan Academy Kids in your classroom.
How much does Khan Academy Kids for Schools cost?
$5 per student per year. Publicly funded PreK programs can access it at no cost for the 2026–27 and 2027–28 school years.
‍
The $5 per student fee covers everything schools and districts get beyond the free app: web-based teacher tools, class and school/district reporting, PreK Assessments, professional learning, a dedicated implementation manager, and technical support. The Khan Academy Kids app itself, along with all of its lessons, books, and activities, is free for families and teachers to use. The fee pays for the support and reporting layer around it.Pricing is $5 per student and quoted per student. Request a quote for your school or district.
What's the difference between the free app and Khan Academy Kids for Schools?
The free app is what children use, along with classroom tools for the teacher in that room. Khan Academy Kids for Schools adds what a school or district needs to run it across many classrooms: web-based access for teachers, school and district reporting, bilingual KA PreK Assessments, professional development, and implementation support.
Do you offer a paid plan for a single classroom?
No. Individual teachers and homeschool educators already have free access to everything they need. Paid partnerships start at 100 students and are built for schools and districts implementing across multiple classrooms or sites.
How do I get a quote?
Fill out the form on this page and our team will follow up with pricing for your enrollment, along with the documentation your business office needs.
Why does a nonprofit charge schools anything?
Khan Academy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and the app stays free for teachers and families. The per-student fee covers the added infrastructure a district implementation requires: reporting, assessments, professional development, and a dedicated implementation manager. Partnership revenue and philanthropic support fund the work of building and maintaining these tools.
Is this the same as Khan Academy or Khanmigo?
Same organization, different tools. Khan Academy is a nonprofit, and Khan Academy Kids, Khan Academy, and Khanmigo, our AI tutor and teaching assistant, are all part of it. Khan Academy Kids is built for children ages 2 to 8, and its pricing is separate from the others.
Can we use Title I, Head Start, or other federal funds for this?
Often, yes. Schools and districts most commonly fund Khan Academy Kids through Title I for supplemental academic programs, Title II (a common fit because a partnership includes professional learning), Title III for English learner supports, and Title IV Part A for well-rounded education.
State early literacy initiatives are another frequent source, and because the per-student cost is low, some districts fund it directly from curriculum, early childhood, or technology budgets.

Beyond public funding, some programs use local education foundations, PTA support, or community and business partnerships. Allowable uses vary by state, funding source, and year. Confirm with your business office or grant officer before you build Khan Academy Kids into a budget.

How is student data handled?
Khan Academy Kids comes from Khan Academy, a nonprofit. There's no advertising business behind the app and no reason to monetize your family's information.
  • We don't sell personal information.
  • We don't show ads in the app, and we don't let third parties track your child across other apps or websites.
  • We collect as little as we can. We ask for a name and age at setup, and we recommend using a nickname. We never ask your child for personal information directly.
  • You can update or delete your account information at any time.

For Learning. Not for Profit
